Mapping/ArcGIS Server
Introduction
Types of web mapping services provided
Web mapping topics and access
1. Introduction
GPURP runs various mapping servers to support classroom and research needs. Mapping services can be delivered to clients in a variety of ways using a variety of protocols. The section below tries to clarify these alternatives. We then list the services currently made publicly available.
2. Types of web mapping services provided
2.1 Basic ways of getting maps
Log onto a mapping service hosted by a web site. Some of these web sites offer more complex mapping abilities (http://urban5.urban.uiowa.edu/website/SteveBrown/gateway/) while others offer quite limited abilities (http://maps.urban.uiowa.edu/JohnsonCountyBaseData).
2.2 Intermediate ways of getting maps
Here the user will need to download a GIS client. Some of these are free e.g. ArcReader. Go to http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/download.html to download this software. ArcReader is similar to a mapping version of Adobe Acrobat. It reads a standard file type (.pmf files). Download a pmf from our website to your local machine and then open the file using ArcReader. The actual maps will be hosted on our server but once the .pmf file is open, ArcReader will download these automatically to your client machine. Technically the data read by the .pmf files is almost always hosted by ArcIMS or ArcGIS Server (occassionally we wrap the data with the .pmf file). Note that some ArcReader maps are 2D while others are 3D.
You could also use Google Earth as a client although this software has less analytical functionality. Download Google Earth if you do not already have it on your computer, go to the area you are interested in. You can add a WMS service by going to Add->Image Overlay or you may add a KML service by going to Add->NetWork Link. For instance, we have a WMS service at: 'http://maps.urban.uiowa.edu/arcgis/services/JohnsonCounty1/MapServer/WMSServer'. Note that this service cannot be accessed from a web browser. Note also that you may need to change some default settings in Google Earth in order for the service to display well. The KML services provide additional 3D data. There are a range of other clients, many of them free, that read WMS and KML services.
2.3 More advanced ways of getting maps
Use an ESRI client to access the 2D and 3D mapping services we offer. Use a WMS or ArcIMS client to access the WMS and ArcIMS services we provide.
ArcGIS Explorer is free and will access ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, WMS and KML services.
ArcCatalog, ArcMap and ArcGlobe are full featured clients that will do the same. All our more advanced 3D services require a ESRI client.
