Civil and Envionmental Engineering
There is a growing and relatively unsatisfied demand in the public sector for technically oriented professionals who have a clear understanding of policy development and implementation. Examples of the types of positions filled by such individuals include public works directors and their assistants, city engineers, transportation engineers, and the staffs of public utilities. Students pursuing a B.S. in civil and environmental engineering may apply for admission to the joint program with urban and regional planning in their sophomore year.
A B.S. in engineering requires 128 hours. The joint degree in planning and engineering requires 152 hours, including a minimum of 35 hours of planning courses and 117 hours of engineering courses. The student would begin taking required and elective planning courses in their junior year, which would count as courses towards the Secondary Area of Focus requrement for the B.S. in Engineering.
