The League of American Bicyclists has recognized the UI with a Silver Bicycle Friendly University award, and students in Urban and Regional Planning had a part in it. Second-year student Andrew Lynch, Chair of the UI Bicycle Advisory Committee, along with the Office of Sustainability, submitted the application for the award. The application was bolstered by the Campus Master Bicycle Plan which was completed last year by the students in our Sustainability Seminar class. The University of Iowa is the only campus in the state of Iowa with a Bicycle Friendly University award.

The award recognizes a lot of work from a previous application in 2012. Since then, the UI Bicycle Advisory Committee was formed, two “Fixit” stations have been installed on campus, a bike commute challenge has been held two semesters, and there is increased covered parking on campus for bikes. The committee also increased bike outreach by offering free bike tune-up days in spring and fall 2014.

The UI Bicycle Advisory Committee consists of students, faculty and staff from across campus.  Liz Christiansen, Director of the Office of Sustainability has played a big part in the formation of the committee and all their projects. One of our faculty, Dr. John Fuller, also serves on the committee.
