Admission

Admission to the graduate program in urban and regional planning requires an undergraduate degree (with any major). In addition to the Application for Admission to the Graduate College, students must submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE-General Test) scores, official transcripts from all academic institutions attended, three letters of recommendation from individuals who can describe academic abilities and potential, and a statement of purpose. The letters of recommendation (no form is used) should be addressed to the Admissions Committee and mailed directly to the urban and regional planning graduate program. All elements of the student's record are considered in the admission decision.

Applications should be submitted as early as possible. Fall admission is strongly preferred. Students should have complete materials to the program admissions director early in the year (preferably by Jan. 15) for fall admission, although applications are accepted until July 15 (April 15 for international students). If departmental funding is requested, all materials should be submitted to arrive by January 15. All students requesting funding must also submit an Application for Graduate Awards.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS REQUESTING FUNDING:
Due to increases in the INS workload, we anticipate delays in the issuance of visas for international students.  We therefore wish to make both admission and funding decisions as early as possible so students will have sufficient time to secure visas.  Students applying for admission and assistantships for the Fall semester should make sure all materials arrive by Jan. 15. The Admissions Committee will begin making decisions on or after January 15 for all completed applications.

International students must submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores (in addition to GRE scores) before admission and funding decisions can be made. The TOEFL should be taken no later than Dec. 1 if students are requesting admission for the following fall semester.

A few students may be admitted in the spring semester, under special circumstances. Application materials for spring admission should be submitted early in the fall (preferably by Oct. 1), but no later than Dec. 1 (Oct. 1 for international students). Contact the program admissions director for more information about spring admissions.
