In 2016-2017, second year Urban and Regional Planning students completed four Field Problems projects for the City of Mason City and the East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA). The Mason City projects operated in tandem to provide that city with an updated comprehensive plan and a first-ever sustainability plan. For ECIA, students prepared a template for evaluating brownfield contamination sites in eastern Iowa as well as information that could be used for informing the public about brownfields. A second ECIA group prepared an evaluation and set of recommendations for the PETAL project, which encourages businesses to adopt green business practices.
